Kitchen Organization with the three "R"s

Updated: Mar 9, 2023

If you ask people what room they feel is the heart of the home, there is a good chance they are going to say the kitchen. After all, this is the space where meals are prepared, homework is done, and important conversations happen. You never want to disrupt the flow of your kitchen, so it is essential to keep such a high-traffic area organised.

The best way to take on any home organisation project is to declutter your space. It is not uncommon to accumulate items over the years but keeping the clutter at bay makes it easier to improve the function of your home. Are you looking to improve the flow of your kitchen? You can get started by checking out the following decluttering and organizing tips.

Reduce Your Kitchenware Decluttering your kitchen is necessary for reducing your kitchenware. You most likely have items in your kitchen that have been forgotten about or never been used. It is time to part with these items to create more space in your kitchen.

You want to avoid overwhelming yourself, so be sure to focus on one area at a time. For example, you may want to start with the upper cabinets before tackling the lower cabinets, and then, you may want to declutter your kitchen drawers. Divide your items into several piles: keeping, donating, selling, and discarding or recycling. If need be, place them in labelled boxes to avoid a mix-up. If you have unused duplicate items, consider getting rid of them. One example includes multiple mugs in the same colour. Unless there is one for each household member, you may want to just keep one mug, but only if you are planning to use it. Reuse the Usable Items Do you have items you want to keep but need to touch up? Touch up those items!

The bar cart with the broken wheels may only need a new set of wheels, or maybe you just need to turn it into a shelf for your on-the-go snacks. Use the lazy Susan you forgot about to quickly access non-perishable packages. Then again, it may be the perfect way to organize your coffee station. It may only need a minor paint job to create a presentable piece. When you repair or repurpose items for reuse, you are saving money and space on brand-new items. Recycle the Unusable Items When creating your discard pile during the decluttering process, you also want to create a pile for the items that can be recycled. This way, you can help the environment while decluttering and organising your kitchen.

You already know that certain glass, plastic, and paper items should go inside your recycling bin. What about the broken coffee maker or toaster? Believe it or not, you can recycle your small appliances. Do a search for recycling centres in your area. Then, you can find out if that location accepts small appliances. With the three Rs of decluttering and a little home organisation, you can easily improve the flow of your kitchen.
